DePaul University

DePaul is the eighth-largest private, not-for-profit university in the nation. Among the top 10 private, not-for-profit universities, all except DePaul are classified as "research extensive" universities, making DePaul the nation's largest university with a primary mission of teaching and service.

In August 2006, The Princeton Review, in its annual survey of the best colleges and universities in the United States, ranked DePaul No. 1 in the nation in the "Diverse Student Population" category. The ranking was the result of a survey of more than 115,000 college students nationwide at 361 top schools. It is featured in the 2007 edition of the Princeton Review's annual college guide, "The Best 361 Colleges."

Our students ranked #1 in the "Happy Students" category for the second time in five years, in 2003. The survey was conducted by the Princeton Review and included questions on 70 different topics about academics, campus life and the student body.

In July 2008, DePaul was ranked No. 1 in the nation in the “Great College Town” category by the Princeton Review’s annual college rankings. The new ranking marks the sixth consecutive year the university has made the nation’s top 20 according to the survey, and DePaul was the only Midwest university among this year’s honorees in the category. Additionally, DePaul was ranked No. 10 in the nation in the “Diverse Student Population” category by the publication.

For the sixth consecutive year, DePaul's service learning program was honored by U.S.News & World Report in its “America’s Best Colleges 2009” edition of the nation's top 25 service learning programs. The publication sought out "schools with outstanding examples of academic programs that are believed to lead to student success." DePaul was the only Illinois university honored for service learning.

In March 2005, DePaul was recognized as one of the country's best universities for fostering social responsibility and public service in the national guidebook, "Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement." Published by the Princeton Review, it notes the nation's top colleges and universities that excel in developing socially engaged students. The authors cited several programs and characteristics that made DePaul stand out, including its Community-based Service Learning program.

In 2005, DePaul's Community Mental Health Center (CMHC) was honored with the American Psychological Foundation's (APF) Harry V. McNeill Memorial Award for Innovative Community Mental Health. The prestigious award, given to one organization in the nation every two years, supports innovation in community mental health and encourages the participation of the local community.

Colleges & Careers Magazine listed DePaul in its 2003 publication as one of the 20 "Cool Schools" in the country that students should look into.

In June 2007, DePaul was presented with a College Partner Award given by the Chicago Public Schools Office of High Schools and Postsecondary Education & Student Development. The award was given in recognition for outstanding support to Chicago Public Schools Professional School Counselors.

DePaul was named for the second year in a row on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction, presented by the Corporation for National and Community Service, in February 2008. This honor recognizes DePaul's leadership in helping to build a culture of service and civic engagement on campuses and in our nation.

College of Commerce and Kellstadt Graduate School of Business

DePaul's graduate entrepreneur program was ranked second and the undergraduate program placed seventh in the Entrepreneur magazine/Princeton Review national rankings of university entrepreneurship programs, which were published in the October 2008 issue of Entrepreneur.

The Leo V. Ryan Center for Creativity and Innovation has been named one of the top-10 university "entrepreneurial hot spots" with "the most innovative programs for fledgling business owners" by Fortune Small Business magazine in its March 2006 issue.

DePaul University’s part-time Master of Business Administration (MBA) program has been ranked sixth in the nation by U.S.News & World Report in the magazine’s 2009 graduate degree rankings, issued in March 2008. DePaul’s career-focused MBA program for working professionals has earned a top-10 rating more than a dozen times in the magazine’s annual rankings.

DePaul's MBA program was rated among the top three in Chicago's highly competitive business school market, according to the first-ever ranking of local MBA programs by Crain's Chicago Business in October 2006.

College of Law

In its March 2008 rankings of graduate programs in America, U.S.News & World Report ranked the College of Law's health law (placing 14th) and intellectual property (11th) programs among the best in the country. Additionally, the College of Law was ranked among the top 100 law schools in the United States earning 88th place.

M. Cherif Bassiouni, a College of Law professor and president of DePaul's International Human Rights Law Institute, was nominated for a 1999 Nobel Peace Prize. The International Scientific and Professional Advisory Council of the United Nations said Bassiouni was the "single most driving force behind the global decision to establish the International Criminal Court."

College of Liberal Arts & Sciences

DePaul's Clinical Psychology program received the American Psychological Association's Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology Award for the Outstanding Training Program in 2006. The award specifically recognizes programs with a demonstrated commitment to training in developmental psychopathology and the creation, evaluation, and practice of evidence-based treatments for psychopathology in childhood and adolescence.

DePaul's community and clinical-community psychology programs were the first-ever recipient of the Award for Excellence in Education Programs, given by the Society for Community Research and Action (SCRA Division 27 of the American Psychological Association) in 2007. The award recognizes exemplary undergraduate and/or graduate program that have innovative structures, strategies, and curricula that promote development of the field of community psychology and community research and action.

School for New Learning

Renowned for its innovative approach to teaching the adult student, SNL has earned international acclaim as a leader in the field of education for adults. SNL was named one of six "Best Practice" institutions in North America by the Chicago-based Council for Adult and Experiential Learning. The Houston-based American Productivity and Quality Center has touted SNL for its individualized education of adult students.

Thanks to SNL, DePaul became one of only seven colleges or universities worldwide to be granted Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status by the United Nations Department of Public Information. NGO status allows DePaul's representatives to attend UN conferences and meetings designated for NGOs.

College of Computing and Digital Media

In 2005, DePaul's College of Computing and Digital Media (CDM) was one of six universities nationwide - and the only university in the Midwest -- selected by Sony Pictures Imageworks to participate in the first-ever Imageworks Professional Academic Excellence (IPAX) program. The goal of the program is to educate faculty and structure curricula in an effort to develop future artists, designers, animators and engineers who will help the visual effects industry to grow.

At the 2006 International Collegiate Programming World Finals, a team of DePaul computer science students finished second among U.S. universities in the competition, behind the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and tied with Princeton University, Cal Tech, the University of Maryland at College Park and Washington University, St. Louis.

CDM is a recognized national leader in computer network security and information assurance education, according to a designation bestowed by the National Security Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. DePaul was named as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance by the two agencies in early 2005.

School of Music

The School of Music was named as one of the "Schools That Rock" in the 2005 Rolling Stone guidebook that evaluated collegiate music schools nationally. The book praised opportunities for DePaul music students to gain practical experience performing with Chicago professional music ensembles and noted the school's performing arts management and sound recording technology programs.

The School of Music is the first and only educational institution to receive the Living Art of Music Award (LA MA) from the Chicago Federation of Musicians. The award recognized the school's commitment to and success in preparing musicians for live performances.

The Theatre School

The New York Times' "Education Life" section has listed DePaul's Theatre School among the top nine schools most often mentioned by casting directors and theatrical agents for the quality of the master's programs in acting.

In April 2006, The Theatre School was profiled in the new national college guidebook, "Creative Colleges," which researched universities from around the country and profiled the top 200 with outstanding programs in art, drama, dance, music and creative writing.

Affinity and Minority Rankings

DePaul was recognized for the diversity of its graduates in the July 2006 Diverse Issues in Higher Education rankings of the 100 top minority degree-producing institutions. DePaul was ranked in 28 different categories, scoring among the nation's top 25 in nine of them. The university scored highest for graduating a significant number of minorities at the master's level with computer and information sciences degrees. The School of Computer Science, Telecommunications, and Information Systems ranked in the top six in the nation in four different categories, including the total number of minority master's degree recipients (No. 3), total Asian master's degree recipients (No. 3), total Hispanic/Latino master's degree recipients (No. 3) and total African-American master's degree recipients (No. 6).

U.S.News & World Report cited the College of Law for having one of the most racially diverse student bodies among the nation's 177 accredited law schools in the magazine's 2003 annual graduate school rankings. DePaul was ranked eighth among the top 100 institutions of higher education to award master's degrees to Latino/Hispanic students, according to The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine's May 2003 issue.
